The Power of Love in a Supernatural War
In a world of spells, curses, and coven wars, love might seem like the last thing that matters. But in The Gifted Series, love becomes a lifeline.
Serenity stands at the centre of this storm of magic marked with prophecy and hunted by ancient powers between two kinds of love, one is Nathan, who is her first love and knew her before even the magic has started and the other one is the immortal who sees her soul even in a state where she even lost the ability to see it herself, Thomas. These two men have contributed meaningfully to her character, and fans cannot stop arguing: who is on the side of Nathan and who is on the side of Thomas?
So, let us look closer at what each of these relationships adds to the story of Serenity- and why love is something that we still care about, even during the war of supernatural forces.
Nathan: The Comfort of the Familiar
Before Serenity realized who she was, Nathan was with him. She was the girl next door to him, not an empowering witch whose life was filled with darkness and light. During their early period in the relationship, Nathan brought her peace. Their relationship was based, sweet and hopeful. At some point, he was her comfort zone; he was the one who helped her feel normal when everything around her was like going down a drain.
However, when Serenity increased in power, that distance between them increased. Nathan belonged to a different world, and love cannot always help to connect the magical and mortal worlds. Nevertheless, he never gave up caring. In spite of them being far apart sometimes, his presence still made her refer to the person she used to be. He is the love you just cannot forget, no matter how time lapses.
Thomas: The Weight of Forever
Thomas represents the opposite of what Nathan is; that is, he is old, eternal, and close to the world Serenity was born in. He has centuries of secrets, grief, and loss, but this is never an obstacle in his path to giving love and care to Serenity. He is somehow closer to her than just being attracted, because he has a spiritual, more or less destined connection to her.
Serenity wants to be recognized as a powerful girl, though Thomas makes her realize that there is much more to her as a strong girl who can bear the burden of her destiny. When struggling, he can see the light in her. And as opposed to Nathan, Thomas has a precise understanding of how it feels to exist with magic, immortality, and a broken heart.
Their love is more gradual, ponderous, and more passionate. It fails to provide escape; it provides power.
Love in the Middle of a War
The romance is not the only thing that makes this triangle so strong; it is what each of the men is in the life of Serenity. Her past is Nathan. Her future lies with Thomas. And somewhere in the middle is a girl trying to be who she was when everything keeps trying to move her in another direction.
As witches betray one another, prophecies come to pass, and her own powers twist on a daily basis, Serenity is desperately trying to hold on to people who help her see what love can be, even through the grim black and white.
In The Gifted Series, love is not a side story. It is reflective. It is the reminder that even in a situation when you are trying to battle the ancient curses and losing the parts of yourself to fear, there is still someone who can see the worth in that fight.
So… Who Has Your Heart?
To each reader, something is different in Nathan and Thomas. Some become attracted to Nathan and his stable, faithful heart. Others are attracted by the soulful, protective Thomas. And then there are the rest of us who have not yet made up their minds.
